eLearning - A Global Perspective

In the age of e-learning
With advancing technology, the process of teaching and learning is also undergoing radical change.
Technology has completely revolutionised classrooms. Whether it is submitting assignments and projects, or making classroom teaching more interactive, the applications are manifold. Instead of carrying heavy bags, students can now carry an enriched digital textbook which contains all the study material.

You'll complete weekly assignments, readings, discussions, and occasional group work, as well as exams and other activities designed to enhance learning outcomes, all at times that are most convenient to you.

Online education is now way beyond a novelty. Some 4.6 million students took at least one online course during the fall 2008 term, or one in four enrolled students, according to the most recent Sloan Report on Online Learning.
Online education courses are delivered entirely via the Internet. Typically, students download the course materials right to their computers, and interact with professors and classmates in online discussion groups. Homework and tests are submitted through the computer. Many courses also incorporate video and audio lectures.

One-to-one (1:1) eLearning provides each teacher and student with a dedicated laptop for use at school and, in many cases, at home. Laptops serve as personal teaching and learning tools that are used throughout the day for many educational tasks and subjects. In a 1:1 environment, students get the maximum value from access to PCs, Internet connectivity, and their integration into the education environment.

Many studies of e-learning programs have concluded that the key to ensuring successful outcomes is to blend more traditional classroom approaches with those that use technology. E-Learning approaches should be treated as a powerful tool that teachers can use, but teachers need to learn how student learning changes with e-learning, and how to alter their teaching methodologies with pedagogical approaches that take advantage of the opportunities afforded by e-learning. A blended approach mixing face-to-face classroom methods with technologymediated activities seems to provide the highest learning outcomes.
